You are here: Visiting Tilting - Attractions - Other Attractions - Bunker Hill
During World War II, the 185th Airborne Division of the United States Army established a base in Sandy Cove for the 1st Early Warning Radar Station in the North Atlantic. The North Eastern location was an excellent position for the early detection of enemy aircraft. The remains of the platform for the station are still intact and can be seen at the top of Bunker hill along the Turpin's Trail. The view from this vantage point is well worth the hike up the steep hill. The military base provided hospital services at a time when most outport communities of Newfoundland did not have access to such levels of health care.
