You are here: Visiting Tilting - Attractions - Cemeteries - Old Irish Cemetery
Located near Lighthouse hill, historians believe that the Old Irish Cemetery is the oldest Irish Catholic Cemetery in Newfoundland. Headstones date to the early 1700's and origins of birth read place names such as Youghal Co. Cork, Carrick-on-Suir Co. Tipperary, Dungarvan Co. Waterford, and Limerick to name a few. This cemetery is a direct link to Tilting's Irish Roots and is a primary example of it*s Heritage. Thomas Burke, of Dungarvan, Ireland who is believed to be the first permanent settler to Tilting is buried in the Old Irish Cemetery.
